Presidents Corner
Dear GBA Members,
Happy New Year and welcome to the GBA President’s Corner quarterly update.
Thank you to everyone who helped to make 2011 a great year for GBA. During this year, GBA membership increased, returning to levels similar to those seen before 2008. In 2011, 40 new members joined the Association.
To continue connecting and expanding GBA’s member base, we brought back some previous GBA networking favorites, such as the GBA Annual Senior Advisory Luncheon, which recognizes the contributions of some of the longest-standing businesses in Georgetown. GBA has also continued to expand its presence in the social media revolution on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. Additionally, partnerships with local media outlets in Georgetown have given GBA more visibility.
Collaboration with other organizations in Georgetown has been—and will continue to be—an important thing for us, as seen by the variety of GBA hosted quarterly events designed to foster conversations with and collaboration between Georgetown organizations, such as CAG, the BID, Georgetown University, and the ANC. This year, GBA also worked with the D.C. Chamber of Commerce so that GBA members can become members of the local Chamber for only a nominal fee. Moreover, we continue to work with the Small Business Development Corporation, which has been charged by the government to provide loans to small businesses in the community.
In 2012, we will continue to build on the momentum already achieved by GBA in 2011 by reaching out to new members, supporting the needs of our current members, and developing a stronger social media presence. Because our success is based on our members, we will host a variety of our most popular activities, including adding new “members only” events.
Additionally, legislation will be an important priority for the GBA because of the need to reestablish a strong lobbying organization for local interests. It is also important to continue collaborating with other Georgetown interest groups to develop ideas about how to make Georgetown the most competitive shopping destination in Washington DC, while also respecting the needs of local residents.
I am proud to have been a part of such exciting developments with GBA thus far. Thank you all for your ongoing leadership and participation in this group. While there may be obstacles ahead, I can’t wait to see what this year brings.
